That's funny, I was put off by it being too shippy, rather than the opposite.
I agree with all your other observations, particularly about LaBarbara's characterisation. It just seemed out of character from what little we've seen of her.

Haa, I was seriously going to post something like that, but I thought it would be kind of rude.  On the subject of Bender's Big Score, I've opined about it plenty elsewhere. What I'll say here is, despite it being quite enjoyable in parts, overall it simply had too many flaws to fully justify it being considered a piece of true Futurama canon. It just in no way, shape or form conformed to the quality of the original series. The reasons for this are manifold, but there's no point in enumerating them all again. As for LaBarbara, though, yes, she basically functioned as a plot device to allow for the inclusion of Barbados Slim. Why the writers were so intent on doing this, I don't know. |

The only thing I can think of is that they wanted to do everything, because they hadn't done anything, so they went a bit crazy. Sort of like I do when I haven't had chocolate for a few months.

I don't even know where to begin. I honestly don't. We're not worthy to say anything about this. I largely agree, Kim, but I didn't think it was worse than the worst Futurama episodes. Barbados Slim isn't even funny, though... EDIT: Graham's probably right. |

I find it hard to think of a "worst" Futurama episode, since I like them all quite a bit. I generally just find some to be weaker than others, but I really enjoy them all quite a bit. I personally would say while Bender's Big Score was funnier than some episodes and in some cases cleverer and nicely emotional than some too, overall I'd probably call it the weakest Futurama has thus far.
There was a lack of subtlety in some cases, some characters were a tad off (and some of the new characters, such as the Blonde Bimbo Doctor, reminded me too much like characters from recent OFF episodes that are nothing more than a one-gag stereotype for the sake of laughs rather than decent characters), the songs suffered greatly from the lack of orchestra, the plot was filled with holes that may or may not be fixed, jokes tended to side more on the crass than the clever and favour the low-brow more than the high-brow (though at least most of it was amusing innuendo, rather than Family Guy-esque show and tell), and it messed with a lot of stuff that, again, may or may not be fixed. Part of it really feels like the gang were so happy to be back and just had to express it as crazily, as off-the-wall and with as many cameos and references to returning as possible.
I guess, personally, I just expected a little bit better. It was still funny, it was still mostly clever and it still had some fantastic moments from our favourite characters. But the series overall, to me, was fantastic and in a league of its own. This just felt good, rather than the product of genius. I just hope they patch up some of the problems in the movies to come and find more of what made the series so fantastic. We saw sparks of it here, but in places... well... it seemed as if they really were catering more towards the Comedy Central audiences these movies will be airing on and less towards the original fans and were trying to be a little more edgy and less nerdy.

Agree. (But I hope you're wrong about the catering to the Comedy Central audience. There's no reason to fear that yet, I hope.)
The bimbo doctor was a one-joke stereotype, and not an incredibly brilliant one. But to their defence, that's all she was meant to be. She wasn't really intended to be an interesting character.
That said, I always find good new characters (that aren't just an excuse to bring in a guest voice) a sign that something is taking risks and being adventurous, so I would have liked more of that.
