Namely, Life in the Fast Lane and Moaning Lisa. And I have but a simple question.
What the hell happened to the show?
I was just stunned by all the emotions being displayed. I mean... Homer... Homer. He had a range of emotions. And no-one did anything wacky! They didn't go to Italy or Japan. They stayed home and dealt with everyday problems. Not once was a problem solved by Homer getting hurt. And there was no obvious guest stars taking the limelight. It's astounding. It was like watching a completely different show.
I really wish it hadn't been cancelled...

<Blomman> who was it that got married here? <Alexander> Oh, that was a drunken night in Vegas I'd rather forget... <Alexander> I mean... Graham and Chris. <Blomman> really? <Alexander> Yes. <Blomman> not that i'm against that kind of thing, but isn't that like, uh, illegal in some states? <Alexander> I could explain, but I don't want to. ------------------------------------------------------ * Alexander is trying to avoid becoming one-dimensional. <Alexander> I've just had a terrible, frightening thought. <Alexander> I've been fleshing out Mara's character, right? Giving her depth? In the meantime, what's happening to *me*? <gkscotty> obviously she's siphoning off your "reality" <Alexander> Dear God. <Graham> She's a vampire! <Graham> A lesbian vampire! <gkscotty> pretty soon, it'll be Mara writing stories about Alex falling in love with Lisa. SHAMELESS PLUG COMMENCINGI have a dA page. Check it out.

I did the same thing about a month and a half ago. That's why I'm so glad DVDs of the show exist. No matter how wacky the show gets, we can always go back and remember how it used to be.

Alex, Chris and Terry Johnson are right. Early eps could do dramatic, hilarious and touching things with minimal wackiness -- far more like a play than the action-movie stuff we're frequently sick of. Moaning Lisa is one of those episodes where we learn about Marge or Homer through Bart or Lisa, and Life in the Fast Lane is brilliantly... er, realistic, sympathetic -- something like that. Are they trying to tailor it to what they see as shrinking attention spans these days?
Old episode rave continued: Even eps like Bart the Daredevil peaked, at least for me, not when Homer tried to jump the gorge but when he explained to Bart why he was doing it. Ugh.

I did a similar thing about a month ago, but with season three rather than one. But I still agree, there's a huge gap between seasons 1-4 and seasons 10-present. In the earlier seasons the writers didn't explain each joke before it was even executed and could go for emotion without resorting to a wacky parody in ill taste...
Considering the quality of some of the fanfiction around here, it's not like quality writing is a feat of impossibility anyway...

One thing that always amuses me sometimes is how concerned Homer was with his family's social standing back in the first season. I mean, Marge, Bart and Lisa were the embarassing ones at Burn's family picnic, while Homer ran round after them trying to get them to behave. How freaky is that?

Life in the Fast Lane is brilliantly... er, realistic, sympathetic -- something like that. The thing that really shocked me when I re-watched this episode was how close Marge came to actually leaving Homer and having a fling with Jaques. I mean 20 years later, I'm watching this thing and thinking, "Oh my God, she's not really going to do it is she?" That's how good it was.
