Well, this was an interesting episode. Was it a good one, though? Eh, it was okay. The framing device of Bart telling about the events of the episode was different, and although I've never seen whatever movie they were referencing (forgive me, I am an uncultured swine), I liked it.

Today, Bart learned that liking a girl who likes you back does not automatically equal a stable relationship or a happy ending. Poor boy just doesn't know how to handle the ins and outs of an actual relationship. Of course he doesn't, he's ten. (And Mary's 13. That strikes me as very odd.) This led to some good stuff; the scene with Bart basically ignoring Mary to play video games felt uncomfortably true-to-life to me. The literal breakup hug was a great visual.

I was surprised by Marge throwing both Homer and Bart out of the house. I know Bart said exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time, but wow. Kind of an out-of-house grounding, I guess. I did like the sequence at the motel, though; the bit with Homer and the noose was a great bait-and-switch gag, and Bart listening to Mary's song was another of those uncomfortable scenes. The ending (epilogue aside) is a pretty down note for a Simpsons episode, though I do like the "We're all the main guys of our own stories" line.

There's some weird stuff in this episode, like the Cartoon Physics Indicator, the imprisoned lumberjack, and that creepy...hobo? Granted, the first one is a different kind of weird than the latter two, but still. Weird.

I like that Shauna seems to be becoming a recurrer.

Bart's look when monologuing and the opening credits are Woody Allen homages, but the plot is probably most similar to "Annie Hall", supported by Lisa's Diane Keaton-inspired outfit at the show's end.

So... I guess Bart & Mary is still a thing from that epilogue? Then again we had that bit with Nikki at the end of her's...

Whole episode was a bit odd. Some of the stuff (the couch gag, cartoon physics indicator, Homer and the noose) were downright funny and then the rest of it felt rather uncomfortable... dunno whether it was the same for anyone else though since I admit, I've kind of got a pairing bias. :V

The Annie Hall homage was spot-on, and I like Mary Spuckler and her relationship with Bart (Zoe Deschunel's VA work is charming and low-key and actual ACTING), and the fact that this is a recurring story plot. I'd be perfectly happy if the two of them ended up together instead of Bart with Genda in future canon, TBQH. Nice to see that singles' complex again, and the montage was hilariously morose. One of my favorite eps of the season.
