I know that I whine about this a lot, but probably my biggest gripe with post-Season 9 episodes is the characterisation of Marge as a cheap, floozy, loopy... basically female Homer with big hair. (I haven't seen the last few seasons, maybe this has been rectified. If so, see this as an delayed rant.)

I just thought of another reason that I dislike this (apart from the big reason that IT'S NOT CANON!): it loses a lot of the hilarity that would stem from Marge doing out-of-character things such as drinking, smoking, suffering from gambling addiction, being greedy, failing the drug test in "Home Sweet Home Diddly-Dum Doodily" etc.

This came to me the other day when I remembered a fanfic idea (probably rather dramatic) that I had about Marge actually getting a drug problem. If I'd written a fic like that back in the 90s, it would actually have been unexpected. Nowadays, it would just be ho hum, what's next?

@Chris - Marge's characterisation is still a tad wobbly - in some episodes she'll feel her normal sensible self, in other episodes they'll amp up her jealousy of other women to rediculous levels.  It (and the show) can be a mixed bag.

The trouble with TPTB's occasional attempts at "serious episodes" is that they don't seem comfortable delving into purely bittersweet threads of narrative: "Round Springfield" and "Lisa's Substitute", just to name two, brought together drama and humor in a comfortable way.  It's as if the writing team resists allowing even "serious" stuff like what's done in "Mona Leaves-A" pass by without inserting a joke every five seconds.  (perhaps to compete with Family Guy?  Family Guy's only got a million more viewers on them per episode lately, though).
