Well I knew Gates would be behind this... I've just looked up the similar legislation pending on this side of the pond. Guess which of my favourite bugbears is behind it here? This sucks. There's always a risk of your stuff getting nicked on the web but I never thought they'd go and make it legal.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, I did suspect that there was considerably overreacting in the article; but that's mostly because I'm so used to media distortion, exaggeration and paranoia that I got used to taking most publications not with a pinch but with a bag of salt. If the DA article is really accurate, then I believe there's no need to panic.
The problem, I believe, is when people overlook the smaller print - and this counts BOTH on the side of over-reaction AND on the side of "turn off your mind, relax and float downstream"; and doesn't that happen everyday?

Well, I've updated the Wikipedia page, which seems the best way of making sure people find out rapidly.

This whole thing stinks of the lobbyists. Whoever the companies are that are aiming to run the private registries stand to make a fortune. As ever, it'd be interesting to follow the money.

Only if they make it law. It's got a lot of opposition. Write to your congressman and all that jazz. You can still influence them if you try hard enough because they still rely on the voters for their livelihoods. We're screwed on this side of the Atlantic, of course. The EU will implement something similar soon and there's nothing we can do about it at all. We're just citizens. We do what we're told.

Nope. About 80% to 90% of our laws come from the EU, which we don't vote for. The EU parliament, the "democratic " bit of the EU, isn't a legislative body and can't do anything apart from whinge. The national parliaments - our supposed governments - have to implement laws handed down to them by the EU, assuming they even get to see them. Most of the law bypasses the national legislatures entirely as "technical directives", or has judgements handed down by the European Court, both of which are instantly binding. Worse still, they're so completely khack-handed at it that they usually design these laws in the worst possible way imaginable. When they get around to doing an orphan works directive it'll make this one look logical and sensible in comparison...
I could go on, but it annoys people and it depresses me.
