Tutorials?

Postby Marco » Sun Jan 09, 2005 10:47 am

Yeah, something i should've done a couple years ago.

I'm doing these as a "how to draw Simpsons guide" for a friend (a damn good "apprentice", to say the truth :) ), but i found that they are helping me a lot too. I have to re-learn to draw Simpsons, since it's been so much time since i did a proper drawing, and since forcing myself to complex pics right away just frustrates me with no results whatsoever, i took this occasion to just start from scratch: what i learnt to draw first was Lisa's head... and from there i shall start again.
A couple of comments from other people convinced me that this might be helpful for other visitors around this board, so i'm going to post in this thread whatever kind of tutorial comes to my mind as i go on. Hoping it will help you as much as it helps me. :)

I know that just looking at the pics won't explain properly about details such as sizes or tricks, and i am aware of the fact that my method for drawing is not quick and easy at all. Many of you might want to draw in another way you feel more confortable with, and it might come out better and quicker. It depends on the person really, and i don't want to seem like i possess "the truth" on how to draw.
But if you're interested, fell free to ask here and i'll try to answer as clearly as i can.

So, on to number 1: Lisa's head

Great stuff, Marco! I'm not sure, but maybe even I will want to follow the tutorial and exercise a bit of drawing myself, but I'm sure that one will be helpful. That's a great thing to do, and I hope we can see more. Good work!

Well, since i've been told that it's pretty hard to follow the sketches without any explanation to back them up, i tried to hack'n'slash the chat into a readable document.
In fact this tutorial is the result of a chat session i had with Dagdamor, and i got permission to edit it out enough to make it easier on whoever wants to know the background behind it.

Anyway, i divided it out into two documents. Front head and Sideways head. I really hope it's at least readable, as i did a quick editing job on it. Many mistakes could be left in too, so don't search for them :P

p.s: Thanks to Dagdamor for his patience with my caffeine writing and a good number of hints and questions that helped me explain things a bit more clearly. :)

I haven't read the RTFs yet, but your Lisa sketch is extra-cute! :) I like how you varied the position of her pupils, it looks like she tries to follow what happens to her head during the drawing process.

Oh, and BTW, would it be possible to change your avatar to a slower or non-animated one? It's kinda disturbing when you're [trying to ;) ]read[ing] the postings.

Yeah, as Andreas said, the sketch is really cute. :)
These tutorials were very useful for me, thankyou again Marco! I do believe they will be useful for anybody who wants to learn to draw the Simpsons from the very beginning, 'cause they are really simple and clear.

Yes, a bit better. I guess it's the best to use a piece of paper or something similar that covers the left part of the monitor while looking at the forums. :D

this is not a tutorial really, i just threw it together very quickly out of boredom and i realized later that the construction lines are well visible. They give out a decent enough view of how i draw lisa's body (which has the same proportions as barts) i think.
I'll try to make a *real* tutorial for it soon though, arms and legs included.
